The Government have endorsed it, doctors regularly refer their clients onto a specialist in it - so what's so special about CBT? The Centre for Therapy reveals why Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is the treatment of choice for those in the UK...

It is typically a short treatment

This can be good news for everyone all round - it is an economical solution to helping individuals get back on track, as the NHS will be able to budget around six sessions per client. Those who are paying for their treatment, again, are unlikely to have more than 6 - 12 treatments.

It's interested in the 'here and now'

Whilst CBT does give a 'nod' to the past of the client, it does focus on the present. CBT looks at what can be done now to improve your life situation. For this reason, it can be particularly effective for mild depression, phobia, anger management, stress and anxiety, to name but a few issues.

CBT works on all 'fronts'

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy addresses your thoughts, feelings and emotions as a means of changing behavioural and cognitive patterns. This means that treatment is more likely to be successful and long-term as you are engaging fully with the treatment, using all your faculties, intellect and emotion.

No pain no Gain - you help yourself!

Anything passive is unlikely to have much effect. For example, if you win a competition from sheer luck, this has less of an impact than if you worked hard to attain it. In the same way, CBT requires that you work at the tools and guidance given outside the therapy room. You are in control from the beginning.

Leave treatment with a set of tools for life

Your CBT Therapist will guide you through the process of self-development, helping you to use a set of cognitive 'tools' with which to take control of your life and your issues. These are valuable tools which, whilst largely logical, can be exceptionally effective when used appropriately.
